Filmmaking 201: Mastering Cinematic Shots in Alaska

Class Description: Join us in beautiful Fairbanks, Alaska for Filmmaking 201: Mastering Cinematic Shots in Alaska—a hands-on, 2-day weekend workshop where creativity meets the wild. This immersive outdoor experience focuses on elevating your ability to see and capture the world through a cinematic lens. Taught by Film Director and Creative Producer Justin Jackola, the workshop emphasizes composition, camera movement, and visual storytelling—helping participants create powerful, intentional footage in some of Fairbanks most stunning natural locations.

This workshop is designed as a flexible weekend experience:

• Students may attend both days as a full weekend experience OR
• Students may attend Day 1 only (Friday, July 24th)
• Students may attend Day 2 only (Saturday, July 25th)

On Day 1, students will travel from Fairbanks to Chena Hot Springs Resort, stopping at curated scenic locations along the way to practice and apply cinematic techniques in real-world environments. On Day 2, students will travel from Chena Hot Springs Resort back to Fairbanks, continuing to refine their skills while capturing new landscapes and perspectives.

Students will learn how to frame compelling shots, work with natural light, and capture visually engaging footage using either smartphones or professional cameras. Throughout the workshop, students will complete guided shooting exercises and submit their best 5–10 clips. These clips will be compiled into a collaborative cinematic slideshow showcasing the beauty of Alaska—which will be displayed on screens throughout Fairbanks during the festival and beyond, with students credited for their contributions! Outside of workshop hours, students are encouraged (but not required) to capture additional footage to contribute to the final class project!

Students must bring:

• Video camera (Smart Phone, DSLR, Prosumer, etc.)(Note: Smartphone users may be required to purchase/download a high quality camera app)
• Tripod or stabilizing device (recommended but not required)
• Vehicle for transportation between locations
• Appropriate outdoor clothing and gear for changing weather conditions
