Plein Air with Gouache and Oil

Join me for four full days painting Plein Air. In this class we’ll set up and paint in a variety of Fairbanks locations. Florals at the Georgeson Botanical Garden, Creamer’s Field, and a river scene are just a few of our great local options. I’ll demonstrate in both gouache and in oils leaving you plenty of time to paint. I’ll show you how to simplify a scene by deciding what to leave in and what to leave out. You know what they say -- Plein air painters have the best office in the world!

Paint My standard color palette for oil is...

Titanium White, Cadmium Yellow, Indian Yellow, Yellow Ochre, Cadmium Red,Permanent Alizarin, Viridian, Cerulean Blue (or hue), Ultramarine Blue, Transparent Oxide Red and recently added Rembrandt’s Cold Grey

Bring at least… red, yellow, ultramarine blue, a brown and white.

(you’ll have the best results using artist grade and not student grade)

Gouache bring what you have or at least a basic palette. I’ll demonstrate studies in gouache and larger paintings in oil. If you decide to use gouache bring a container for water and I like having a small spray bottle on hand too.

Canvas or linen panels. At least 4…. 9x12 -12x16 being sure they fit on your easel (If you know you are a fast painter, bring more!)

Brushes a variety from small to large and bristle to soft (definitely a large)

Palette knife for mixing or painting

Gamsol by Gamblin is the only solvent (like turpentine) allowed in a classroom for health and safety and closable container for use.

Paper towels and a bag for trash (I like Viva because they are absorbent and no pattern and I use a clip to attach it to my easel

Easel A plein air set up being an easel and palette easily set up outdoors. French easels, Soltek, Easy L, Box and Panel, are a few. Many set up on a tripod. If you have questions, feel free to email me. I might even have a couple to loan if needed.

Other items to consider gloves, apron, neutral colored shirts, a panel box (clean unused pizza boxes are also a good way to transport wet paintings) and a sketchbook and soft pencil.
